Working as a Graphic Designer

Having being a designer for almost as many years as I can remember, it’s about 15 years to be precise, I have picked up many skills!

Skills that I want to be able to share as that is one of my passions, teching, coaching, mentoring and supporting others to excel in their chosen career. This week I have applied to a tutoring group so I can share my skills with young artists, creators and designers in the making. I have learnt over these 15 years that you have to work quick when out in the ‘real world’ and this can sometimes be a lot of pressure but with some great tips and how to’s you will be well prepped to go into the industry.

It was always nice to work in sketchbooks when at University, but I also hated opening a new sketchbook to the blank pages and feeling daunted by the fact I needed to fill it to complete my project! Do you know the feeling? You could work slowly, more creatively with a sketchbook and let your ideas evolve from sketches, paintings and different mark makings. Allowing ideas to flow and develop into what then over a month or so became final ideas for my knitwear pieces.

You don’t get that luxury in industry real world though, you may have a couple of hours to complete a piece of work, or if your lucky a week or two to complete a whole range for selection. So you have to work fast AND you have to know what you are going to design almost from the off! Maybe with a couple of trend boards and mood imagery for inspiration.

Working flat out on Adobe Illustrator to create allover patterns, graphics, characters became the norm. Fifteen years on I look back and think how can we improve the process?

Well I have lots of tips and tricks I can share with you, if you want to have some 1-1 training courses then get in touch!
